I purchased the Bury Black Poplar from the timber yard at my university in 2002, but I didn’t make anything with it until 2005. This chest of drawers was a speculative piece to use at Exhibitions. The carcass is made from Scottish Ash, the drawer insides are made from European Sycamore, and the spectacular Bury Black Poplar makes up the plant-on drawer fronts. The carcass and drawers are made in a traditional way, using dovetail joints. The drawers run on traditional hardwood rails, and the bottoms are Western Red Cedar. Because of the front design, there is no need for handles, a pet hate of mine! I went on to sell this at an exhibition in Edinburgh in 2010.
