Bookshelves

This was a very special commission for me, as the clients are close friends. They were redecorating and changing the furniture in their sitting room, and I was asked to construct some sturdy bookshelves.

The shelves were built in two sections, thus producing the thumbnail groove in the middle where the two sections meet. The shelves are all fixed in position, per the clients request, and makes the structure much sturdier and robust. The timber used was American White Oak, sourced in Scotland, which is a fairly straight, grained, knot-free timber. Shelf widths, in my opinion, should be no longer than 900mm, which was another reason to make the piece in two sections. I get invited over for food and drinks from time to time, and I’m pleased to say they are filled with books now. It’s a real joy to go back and see my previous work.
