Arts and Craft Kitchen

Back in 2011 I received an email from Karen and Len telling me they’d bought an Arts & Crafts house in Hawick, and whether I knew anyone who made kitchens. I immediately replied saying, yes I do, me! This was a dream job for me as Arts & Crafts is my thing. So I set about designing and making their very curvy kitchen, which is my take on Arts & Crafts. The sink unit is almost a complete circle, and I couldn’t find any big round sinks. I stumbled across this unusual sink on Ebay one night and emailed a link to Karen who immediately got back, saying she liked it, and asked whether she should buy it. I emailed a reply saying ‘if you don’t buy it now, I will!’

Everything in the kitchen was made from solid timber: the carcasses are Tulipwood, the tops consist of American Black Walnut (which incorporates a hob), the sink and a slab of granite, which Karen bought in a junk store. Many hours were spent in the workshop making the piece, then we finally arrived on site. I worked and lived in their house for 5 days, as the house sits on a high hill in Hawick. Enjoying the view over the town, while consuming some beers Len had left me in the fridge, was an awesome way to end the work day!
