This staircase was designed by the Architectural Collaboration ‘Bern Baffle’ and timber was stipulated to be European Oak stringers, treads and handrails, with the spindles being turned from European Sycamore. The design also incorporated a ‘toy box’ to the left hand side; the last time I visited, it was full of supermarket carrier bags! With the first site visit, the floor to floor height was taken, and an AutoCad drawing was produced, which then created a template jig for routering the strings. It was eventually fitted over two days on site. I went on to work with Bern again on a couple of similar staircases.
